چکیده

Both brown (detrital-based) and green (algal-based) food pathways support freshwater webs, although the importance of either source may vary within species, regions different phases flow regime. The bony bream (Nematalosa erebi Clupeidae: Dorosomatinae) is one Australia’s most widely distributed fish species a key component especially in northern Australia. We sought to better define feeding habits this previously classified as detritivore, algivore or zooplanktivore (or combinations thereof), by undertaking meta-analyses published accounts based on stomach content analysis 13C 15N stable isotope analysis. Stomach clearly indicated that detritus was dominant item, benthic algae could be an important dietary some habitats (inland river flood plains) during wet season. Zooplankton were for small (i.e. juveniles <100mm length). When data pooled across large number locations, derived from terrestrial vegetation aligned isotopically with values both adult juvenile bream, whereas comparatively enriched, indicating latter not contributor biomass species. However, using site-specific regression approach, significant relationship revealed between algal carbon fish, suggesting contributed ~20% bream. similar amount. provided majority fish. contend likely remaining interpretation supported outcomes multiple analyses. Although previous studies aquatic webs Australia have emphasised high-quality basal resources, study indicates sources demonstrates need consider circumstances cause biota switch sources.

Folkbiology of freshwater fish.

Cross-cultural comparisons of categorization often confound cultural factors with expertise. This paper reports four experiments on the conceptual behavior of Native American and majority-culture fish experts. The two groups live in the same general area and engage in essentially the same set of fishing-related behaviors. Nonetheless, cultural differences were consistently observed. Majority-cu...

Genetic Evidence for Multiple Sources of the Non-Native Fish Cichlasoma urophthalmus (Günther; Mayan Cichlids) in Southern Florida

The number and diversity of source populations may influence the genetic diversity of newly introduced populations and affect the likelihood of their establishment and spread. We used the cytochrome b mitochondrial gene and nuclear microsatellite loci to identify the sources of a successful invader in southern Florida, USA, Cichlasoma urophthalmus (Mayan cichlid). Our cytochrome b data supporte...

Governance supporting distributed energy systems for low carbon urban development

Global change is required from a strong dependency on high consumption and carbon intensive economies to reduced consumption and low carbon society construction. Cities can offer an enormous contribution to the reduction of carbon emissions; however this process requires a certain degree of rethinking and redesigning of our cities including, infrastructural restructuring with network patterns a...

Realtime Widely Distributed Instrumentation Systems

In the future, real-time, on-line instrument systems connected by wide area networks will be the norm for scientific, medical, and similar data generating systems, because the associated human community, the instruments, and the resources required for data processing are increasingly distributed. The modern instrument environment is characterized by steadily increasing quantities and rates of d...
